Celebrating 95 Years of Power
As the energy landscape evolves, NYPA’s mission surges forward
Today, April 27, we celebrate 95 years of the New York Power Authority (NYPA), a milestone that’s rooted in our commitment to delivering reliable, affordable power across New York.
For nearly a century, we have held steady to a simple, unwavering mission: to serve the people of New York State.
In 1931, when the United States was still in the grip of the Great Depression, access to affordable electricity wasn’t just a convenience; it was a lifeline. It meant heat in the winter. Light after sunset. Little things that we take for granted today. With that in mind, forming the Power Authority wasn’t just about generating megawatts; it was about unlocking opportunity.
Throughout much of our organization’s 95-year history, a large part of our identity has been tied to water, harnessing the natural force of rivers and reservoirs to generate clean, reliable electricity. It’s an important legacy, and one that continues to matter greatly. Through our large-scale hydroelectric projects and transmission infrastructure, we have supported energy efficiency, reliability and quietly enabled growth across industries. Today, we produce 25 percent of the state’s electricity with more than 80 percent of it being clean renewable hydropower, and we operate one-third of its transmission system. One of our core values sums up all we do: “We work for the greater good and a stronger, sustainable New York.”
As we approach our first century milestone, our role in power generation on behalf of New York continues to expand. Longstanding strengths remain critical, but they are now being advanced alongside expanded clean energy efforts, including renewables and nuclear generation, helping create the next phase of New York’s interconnected energy landscape.
We will continue to build on our focus on infrastructure and strong asset management practices, as well as reliability, efficiency and resilience – all while supporting economic growth, and a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for New York.
Anniversaries are often about looking back. But, at a moment like this, NYPA’s 95th invites something more. Because our story isn’t defined only by the years behind us, but by what we’re doing with the years ahead. Regardless of the opportunity or challenge ahead, our mission remains clear:
