Power Proceeds Spotlight: Eden-based farm fulfills over 6,000 orders for Memorial Day Planters
Eden-based business Amos Zittel & Sons received a Western New York Power Proceeds Allocation Fund grant from NYPA in 2014.
Memorial Day flowers are a traditional way to honor fallen soldiers and express remembrance.
Amos Zittel & Sons is an Eden-based, family-run business that has been providing flowers, plants, and fresh market fruits and vegetables to the Eden Valley and beyond for over a century.
Ten years ago, NYPA awarded a Western New York Power Proceeds Allocation Fund grant to Amos Zittel & Sons to rebuild two acres of energy efficient greenhouses to replace those destroyed by a November 2014 snowstorm that hit WNY and caused several million dollars damage to the farm's greenhouses, buildings, equipment and crops.
Today, Amos Zittel & Sons' greenhouses bloom with millions of plant material which ships to garden centers all over the country.
Amos Zittel & Sons farm fulfilled roughly 6,000 Memorial Day Planter orders this weekend. Pictured above are rows of Memorial Planters the Zittel team put together-- arrangements of beautiful florals fashioned with the American Flag.
Amos Zittel & Sons currently employs 155 New Yorkers, 60 of which are greenhouse employees! The Zittel operation produces vegetables on ~400 acres and has expanded its greenhouse operation to three acres. Amos Zittel & Sons' state-of-the-art greenhouses allow the farm to be more competitive with its rooted liner and finished annual flower business.
